My Opinion on Aronson VS. Pinkney
After reading the articles "Slippery Slopes and Proliferating Prizes" and "Awards That Stand on Solid Ground" I was able to develop my own opinion derived from these opposing articles. The argument of Aronson is, that "ALA's sponsorship of three awards in which a book's eligibility is determined by age, race, or ethnicity if its creators is a mistake". The three awards he is directing attention towards are the Coretta Scott King Award, Pura Belpre and Asian American Awards. My opinion on this subject is that marginalized groups such as these should be able to have their own form of awards. It is my belief that if such awards did not exist, these groups would be severely underrepresented in literature. My views are similar to those of Pinkney; she believes that these awards are "a gateway to progress". These awards are helping to mainstream more diverse literature and it is not penalizing anyone, it is merely assisting authors with showcasing their literature.

Do you think there is a possibility there could be too many awards after a period of time? I think these awards do help those in search of materials dealing with issues of diversity. Thanks for taking a stand on this issue.
